Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day as it is commonly known is celebrated in Great Britain on the 4th Sunday of Lent. Other countries of the world celebrate their own Mothers Day at different times throughout the year. Even in the days of ancient Greece there were days for honouring Mothers. However, then it was Rhea, the Mother of the Gods that was given tribute. During the 16th century in England there was an annual celebration called Mothering Sunday. Traditionally it was a day when children, mainly daughters who had gone to work as domestic servants and who generally lived with their employers were given a day off to visit their Mother and family. It was customary for them to bring a special fruit cake (called a Simnel cake) to celebrate the occasion. Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their “Mother” church once a year. So annually in the middle of Lent everyone would visit the “Mother” church or the main church or cathedral of the area. Many historians think that it was the return to the “Mother” church that led to the tradition of children being given the day off. As they walked along country lanes, children would pick wild flowers or violets to take to church or give to their mother as a small gift. Today children give gifts, flowers and cards to their Mothers to show how much they care.
