Candles, the early yearsLooking for something special? You’ll find it on TUGS when you see our range of handpoured designer candles and scented candles that fill the home with fragrance.
Candles... responsible for lighting mans progress through the centuries likely began with the Egyptians who made extensive use of 'rushlights' or 'torches' which were made by soaking reeds in molten tallow. From around 165 B.C, the Jewish Festival of Lights (Hanukkah), has been celebrated over an eight day period by the lighting of candles, together with feasting and the general exchange or giving of gifts. The Romans also employed tallow, which was created from cattle and sheep suet for their torches. Indeed this was used as the primary ingredient until the early 'middle ages' when candlemaking became more of a refined and well respected skill. Candles, the middle agesBeeswax, secreted by honey bees during the honeycomb process quickly became recognised as the more efficient and cleaner way to create light using raw local materials. A widely held belief during the 15th century was that bees originated from paradise hence the extensive use of beeswax in church candles countrywide. Predictably, it was a byproduct of the whaling industry which brought about radical changes within established candle making. Previously made by hand, candles saw their first mass production process emerge when in 1834 an inventor named Joseph Morgan introduced a mechanical method of making candles revolutionising candle manufacture all over the western world. Scented candles... a continued history of candle making.
